GLENSWILLY HOPING THE SUN RETURNS FOR THEIR ANNUAL 5K FUN RUN

first_imgMembers of the organising committee of the Glenswilly 5KAfter last year year’s hugely successful inaugural event, the Glenswilly GAA 5K fun run and walk is set to attract large crowds once again.The race, which is now officially part of the Grand Prix series, will take place next Tuesday, June 25th starting at 7.30pm.Organisers are hoping the event attracts good weather similar to last year which saw more than 500 walkers and runners turn out. All money raised on the evening will go directly towards the development of underage football.Those planning to take part in the race, whose main sponsor in the Sandwich Company, are being advised to register on the night before the race between 6 and 7pm at the clubhouse.Those who cannot will have the chance to register on the night of the race between 6 and 7pm.Entry fee is €8 and under 16s are completely free to enter. One touching aspect of this year’s race is the presentation of the Moira O’Neill Trophy to the first lady runner home.Letterkenny woman Moira died last year aged just 57 after a brave battle with a long-term illness.The marathon runner for many years and her achievements raised the profile of the 26.2-mile event.She finished eighth in the marathon at the Commonwealth Games in Edinburgh in 1986 and 12th in the Auckland games four years later.O’Neill’s Belfast victories came in 1985 and 1986, with Dublin in 1988.
