Environment groups say oil industry asks will lead to climate chaos

first_imgOTTAWA — Several of Canada’s leading environment groups say the list of election demands from Canada’s oil industry earlier this week are a direct attack on the future health and prosperity of Canadians. The Canadian Association of Petroleum Producers issued a list of things it would like to see from federal parties in the fall campaign to help increase production of Canadian fossil fuels.Dale Marshall, national program manager at Environmental Defence, says if the world is going to stop global warming it has to retire fossil fuels, not produce more of them.Environmental Defence, the David Suzuki Foundation and Greenpeace Canada are among more than half a dozen organizations that issued a joint statement Wednesday urging political parties to reject the petroleum industry’s vision.Marshall says expanding fossil-fuel production as envisioned by the oil industry would lead to “climate chaos.”He says investing in clean and renewable energy that can be exported will result in the same economic benefits without the accompanying climate disasters.last_img
