news McLaren As Formula One prepares to take to the track for the first time in 2018 at the opening test in Barcelona on Monday, Zak Brown, the executive director of McLaren, has insisted that anything less than a marked improvement in performance from the British team would be unacceptable.McLaren have endured three woeful seasons with an unreliable and underpowered Honda engine. Having switched to Renault for this year they will be under intense scrutiny to prove at the Circuit de Catalunya that a return to the top end of the grid is possible from the very moment the MCL33 hits the track. Since Bruce McLaren first entered his team in an F1 race in 1966, they have gained 182 victories, 12 drivers’ championships and eight constructors’. However, their last drivers’ title was Lewis Hamilton’s in 2008 and they have not won a constructors’ since 1998. McLaren, once a powerhouse in F1, have not won a race since Jenson Button did so at Brazil in 2013, after which a slump has became a steep decline.Last year brought a drawn-out divorce from Honda and a new deal with Renault, whose power unit is not the best on the grid but did return wins for Red Bull. Having disposed of the engine problem, Brown and his team know this season they will have to answer for any shortcomings. “This is a big year,” he said. “Clearly we think we’ve got great drivers, a great team, a great power unit. The nice thing about Formula One is that people get to see how we’re doing live. There’s no hiding.”For the last three opening season tests, hopeful optimism quickly disappeared but it is present again for the next few days in Barcelona and Brown has made it clear he expects a good test to translate into results – competing with former rivals and the fellow Renault-engined team Red Bull is the target. “A disappointment would be not being further up the grid,” he said.“We expect to be fighting for podiums, whether that is the top step, second step or third step. Red Bull is the team that everybody will compare us to and the Renault team was getting very strong and they have got a great driver line-up so they are the obvious benchmarks. If you look where Renault finished, and what Red Bull did, and that’s including winning races, we have got to be there or thereabouts.” Read more Share via Email Read more Share on Messenger … we have a small favour to ask. Catching them would be a huge step forward but Brown believes they can bridge the gap. “This team has won lots of world championships so we’re up for it. We will be one of the most-viewed teams. If everyone asked: ‘Who is the team that is going to have the biggest change?’ it would probably be McLaren. We know all eyes will be on us.”The team has previously been adamant that they had a fundamentally strong car, let down by the power unit, a claim that will face its sternest test in Barcelona. “We had a great chassis last year and everything is looking good in the development phase but the proof is in the pudding when you hit the track,” said Brown. The test will be of great import to McLaren’s No 1 driver, Fernando Alonso, who agreed to remain with the team for a further year on the basis that the car would be more competitive. Alonso made no secret of his frustration with Honda and has already agreed to compete in the full FIA World Endurance Championship season with Toyota in his bid to win the Le Mans 24 Hours, alongside his McLaren duties. How this year’s car performs in Barcelona may prove key to his future in F1. “What’s going to drive Fernando is how he feels about how he’s competing on track is going to drive his passion for how much longer he wants to do Formula One,” Brown said. failed to qualify for this year’s U-17 World Cup File Related News On Friday afternoon maybe for the first time ever the football world will have its eyes on India The U-17 World Cup draw here today is certain to attract anxious anticipation from the 24 participating nations and the billions who follow the sporting universe’s No1 sport The hosts might be tense before their global debut; the usual ‘draw day’ nervousness among the fans or even teams will be missing With no clear favourites or a well-defined time-tested hierarchy in FIFA’s age-group tournaments the ritual of picking tiny ball from glass bowls isn’t expected to trigger nail-biting drama Often derided for under-achieving at the senior level the African nations rule the under-17 event Seven out of the 16 editions have been won by Nigeria and Ghana The previous edition in 2015 saw an all-African final for the first time with Nigeria and Mali locking horns The otherwise dominant European and South American nations except Brazil pale in comparison The fickle nature of this tournament can be further gauged from the fact that defending champions Nigeria haven’t even qualified They are the u-17 World Cup’s most successful team winning it five times and finishing runners-up thrice The reason for Nigeria not qualifying was the same that has overshadowed each of their triumphs – age fraud Last August 26 players from Nigeria’s u-17 team failed age tests conducted ahead of an African Cup of Nations qualifier against Niger According to some reports only two players from the starting XI were eligible to play Not surprisingly Niger qualified for the World Cup Nigeria could not It’s not just a smear In an interview to the BBC in 2010 former Nigerian football association president Anthony Kojo Williams confessed in as many words “We use over-age players for junior championships I know that” he was quoted as saying “Why not say it It’s the truth We always cheat It’s a fact” The success of African nations is often seen with cynicism but has been assisted by the general indifference shown by the others towards this tournament The Europeans had structure but showed no interest while the South Americans showed willingness but lacked proper system Englishman Steve Darby who has coached in eight countries including India says it’s only recently that the European nations have begun to see this tournament as a ‘pathway to tournament success in later years’ “The clubs in the big leagues of Europe have control of the players as opposed to the football associations (So) initially in the 90s they didn’t see the value of the tournaments The South Americans always did” the former coach of Bahrain Thailand and Laos national teams says “Also as this is an under-17 tournament many of the European players had school commitments So overall the tournament wasn’t valued as it is now by European teams” Still the traditional big names haven’t made the cut for the 24-team event which will be held in six Indian cities from October 6 to 28 Holland Belgium Italy and Portugal have all missed out One of the reasons for this it is argued is that top footballing nations adopt a development-oriented approach rather than focussing only on results Cesc Fabregas (2003) and Toni Kroos (2007) have both won the Golden Ball at the U-17 World Cup but neither Spain nor Germany have won the tournament Belgian football writer Samindra Kunti says since the country’s first-round exit at the Euro 2000 which they co-hosted with Holland the focus has been firmly on youth development where results have become secondary “This applies even today for Belgium’s youth teams The first priority is the development of team and players results come second” Kunti says Brazil is one of the few countries that has balanced development with results and also affirmed its dominance across all age-group events They are the second-most successful nation winning the biennial event three times although their last title came in 2003 Their South American rivals Argentina meanwhile have struggled They could not win even one match in their previous campaign in 2015 and have failed to qualify this time “The main reason is depth Brazil still has a lot more depth than other South American countries even at youth level” Brazilian journalist Paulo Freitas says “The youth championships are fairly important for all South American nations but in the case of Argentina their federation has been chaotic in recent years with political issues and lack of money That which seems to have affected how their youth national teams and football in general is run” When the groups are drawn Brazil without a doubt will be the most feared among the 24 teams But like Mali showed in the previous edition it’ll be foolhardy to dismiss the smaller nations For all the latest Sports News download Indian Express App More Related NewsA demand for a separate High Court in Telangana today led to heated Two years of behind-the-scenes negotiations between state lawmakers and the Seminole Tribe of Florida has produced little of substance in securing a new gaming compact. And while that remains true today, Gov. Ron DeSantis and Senate President Wilton Simpson, R-Trilby, both confirmed last week – without disclosing details – that the stalemate could end soon.“We will probably know one way or the other within the next week or so whether we have a path to agreement or whether that agreement may remain elusive going forward,” DeSantis told reporters after he met with 20 Florida pari-mutuel industry leaders representing casinos, cardrooms, horse tracks and jai-alai frontons.Simpson said a bill could be filed by this week spelling out a proposed Seminole gaming deal. “We would certainly like to get a compact finished,” he said. The Seminoles’ $350 million annual pact with the state expired in May 2019. Lawmakers and the tribe have since failed to agree on a slate of issues, including “designated player” or “banked” card games – a blackjack-poker hybrid – offered at many Florida pari-mutuel businesses. The Seminoles successfully claimed in court the state’s failure to install “a mechanism to shut down the illegal banked card games” violated the compact, negating its renewal in 2019. The tribe is demanding exclusive ability to offer blackjack.Complicating negotiations is uncertainty over control of online gaming and discord over newly-legal sports wagering in the context of November 2018’s passage of Amendment 3, largely bankrolled by Disney and the Seminoles, which requires any “expansion of gambling” be approved by voters. That Seminoles maintain the state’s taking control of online and sports wagering is illegal under Amendment 3 without a voter referendum.Senate leaders, led by former Senate President Bill Galvano, R-Sarasota, and now Simpson, have negotiated tentative deals the last two years, including one in which the Seminoles’ seven casinos operate online sports betting “hubs” in exchange for resuming $700-to-$750 million annual payments to the state. Some lawmakers do not want the state to cede control of online gaming and sports wagering and over the last three sessions have filed bills proposing to implement a state regulatory scheme.Sen. Jeff Brandes, R-St. Petersburg, has filed three bills to allow the state’s lottery department issue licenses and oversee legal sports wagering with revenues dedicated to education beginning Oct. 1, 2021.Brandes’ Senate Bill 392 authorizes the state’s lottery to operate a sports wagering program and lays out the parameters of how it would operate. SB 394 imposes a 15% tax on revenues and SB 396 establishes $100,000 application and renewal fees for licenses. The bills are essentially prods to spur urgency in gaming compact talks, but DeSantis said Thursday with revenues exceeding projections and nearly $10 billion in federal aid negating projected two-year revenue shortfalls, Florida can negotiate from a position of strength.“If it’s something that benefits the state, we obviously have an obligation to work to do that,” he said. “But at the same time, we are not in a position where we’re desperately needing additional revenue – and I think that that’s a good position to be in.”That had to be good news for the pari-mutuel operators the governor had just met with. For hood measure, he added any new gaming compact must benefit the operators of race tracks, cardrooms and jai-alai frontons.“Ultimately, I don’t represent the Seminoles,” he said. “I represent Florida businesses and employees. We want to make sure those folks do well under whatever arrangement may be reached between the state of Florida and the nation of the Seminole Indian Tribe.” “If it’s something that benefits the state, we obviously have an obligation to work to do that. But at the same time, we are not in a position where we’re desperately needing additional revenue – and I think that that’s a good position to be in.” – Governor DeSantisBy John Haughey | The Center Square Please enter your name here Photo by Macau Photo Agency The Anatomy of Fear Support conservation and fish with NEW Florida specialty license plate You have entered an incorrect email address!
