first_imgJob DescriptionThe Virginia-Maryland College of Veterinary Medicine at VirginiaTech seeks a skilled and focused leader for the position ofDirector of the new Animal Cancer Care and Research Center. ThisCenter is located in the Fralin Biomedical Research Institute onthe Virginia Tech Carilion Health Sciences Campus in Roanoke,Virginia. The facility provides comprehensive cancer care forveterinary patients in the Commonwealth of Virginia and surroundingstates with a strong emphasis on comparative oncologyresearch.Vision: To unify one-health cancer research and be the model forunparalleled care of pets and their families to accelerate curesfor all.The Animal Cancer Care and Research Center occupies 18,680 squarefeet on the first floor of the new Virginia Tech CarilionBiomedical Research Addition. The center includes client receptionand waiting areas, exam rooms, offices and touch-down space forfaculty, graduate students/house officers, conference room,research labs, reception/business offices, animal treatment rooms,chemotherapy delivery and chemotherapy preparation rooms, surgicalsuites, anesthesia induction room, sterile prep room, anesthesiarecovery ward, multiple animal holding wards, linear acceleratorvault and control room, radiation treatment planning room,radiology suite, ultrasound suite, and a tissue collection room.The center contains a state-of-the-art stereotactic radiosurgery(SRS) linear accelerator, a general diagnostic digital x-raymachine with a 50 KW three-phase high frequency x-ray generator,and an ultrasound machine with color doppler capability. The centeris immediately adjacent to the Fralin Biomedical Research Instituteimaging core in order to facilitate shared use of advanced imagingequipment. This imaging core includes advanced CT, MR and PETimaging capability.The Director will have authority for fiscal, administrative,fiduciary, and programmatic functions of the center. She/he will beresponsible for ensuring proper business practices and internalcontrols to ensure compliance with university policies andprocedures. This person will be a member of the college’s ExecutiveBoard and will report to the Dean. The director will also maintaina reporting line to the Executive Director of the Fralin BiomedicalResearch Institute. She/he will serve on boards in the FralinBiomedical Research Center and the Academic Health Center tofacilitate research collaborations and to advance the researchmission of the college and the institute. The Director will have amajor role in the fundraising efforts of the college and theAcademic Health Center to advance the clinical and translationalresearch enterprise, including travel and high-level strategicconversations with donors and prospective donors. This positionwill have an academic appointment in the Department of Small AnimalClinical Sciences. This position will be approximately 85%administrative with a 15% clinical or research commitment insupport of the Center’s mission.The Director will serve as chief medical officer for the AnimalCancer Care and Research Center. The center has three medicaloncologists, two radiation oncologists, two surgical oncologists,as well as residents and interns. The staff is comprised of apractice manager, radiation therapist, part-time radiationphysicist, multiple licensed veterinary technicians and veterinaryassistants, business office assistants and a patient carecoordinator.
