Police receive dozens of tips after seeking help identifying suspected McArthur victim

first_imgToronto police say they’ve received dozens of tips since releasing a photo of a dead man believed to be a victim of alleged serial killer Bruce McArthur.Investigators put out the photo on Monday, saying they were taking the rare step in hopes someone could help identify the person.Det. Sgt. Hank Idsinga said investigators are sifting through information they’ve received, but added that identifying the man could take weeks.“Short of a direct family member calling and saying ‘that’s so-and-so,’ we have to sort through the tips and use the process of elimination,” he told The Canadian Press on Tuesday. “Eventually we would pursue ‘possibles’ and hope that DNA or dental records would match up with found remains.”Police have said the man was dead when the picture was taken, but won’t say when or how they obtained the image. The head shot of a bearded middle-aged man with his eyes partially shut was released as police announced finding the remains of a seventh individual linked to McArthur. The 66-year-old landscaper is currently facing six first-degree murder charges in relation to men who disappeared from Toronto’s gay village or had ties to the city’s LGBTQ community. The investigation, which police have described as unprecedented in scope, has proceeded on multiple fronts, with investigators gathering evidence, searching multiple properties and examining hundreds of missing persons cases in search of potential links to McArthur.McArthur was arrested in January and charged with the murders of Andrew Kinsman and Selim Esen, who went missing from Toronto’s gay village in 2017.Later that month, McArthur was charged with the first-degree murder of Majeed Kayhan, Soroush Mahmudi, and Dean Lisowick. In February, he was also charged in the death of Skandaraj Navaratnam.Idsinga has said there was evidence pointing to a cause of death in at least some of the cases, but wouldn’t elaborate.Police have found seven sets of remains in planters recovered from a Toronto property where McArthur worked as a landscaper. So far, police have only identified three of the sets of remains recovered — those of Kinsman, 49, Mahmudi, 50, and Navaratnam, 40.McArthur’s next court hearing is set for March 14.last_img read more

Stars Support Roald Dahl Charity

first_imgLast Tuesday night, Tim Minchin, Quentin Blake and Heston Blumenthal joined Samantha Cameron at Number 10 Downing Street to celebrate the work of Roald Dahl’s Marvellous Children’s Charity, helping to support seriously ill and disabled children around the UK.Tim Minchin, award-winning composer of smash hit West End production Matilda the Musical, said: “This marvellous charity believes that every child has the right to have the best life possible, however difficult and short that life might be.”He said, “The charity has a brilliant holistic approach, helping children with rare and severe disorders of the brain and blood, to have better health, a fuller life and a happier family.”Ongoing support and donations are crucial for the charity in its work, which was set up in 1991. The charity provides practical help by supporting families to assist with equipment purchases such as wheelchairs, supports grassroots projects, funds specialist paediatric neurological and haematological nurses, and provides grants for training and research.Special guests included the families helped by the charity such as Kharis and Edward. Kharis (13) and Edward (9) Botchway both have sickle cell and are patients of Phil Daly, a Roald Dahl haematology specialist children’s nurse at St Mary’s Hospital, Paddington.Chief Executive, Richard Piper, said: “I’m delighted that we were able to host an event at Downing Street. Roald Dahl’s Marvellous Children’s Charity exists to fill gaps and those gaps are still enormous. For example we have received 16 enquiries in the last 12 months for our unique specialist nurses programme. But at the moment we only have the funds for one.”Visit roalddahlcharity.org to find out more.Source:RoaldDahlCharity.orglast_img read more

Beside The Points For Monday Oct 30 2017

Things That Caught My EyeWhat on earth did I just watchLast night Houston beat Los Angeles 13-12 at home in 10 innings in one of the most ridiculous baseball related experiences America has collectively endured. The FanGraphs win probability chart looks like an advanced Lunar Lander level on Atari. There were seven home runs in the game’s 5-hour, 17-minute runtime. The Astros outscored or tied five NFL teams this week. Based on average change in win probability alone, it was the second-best ever World Series game ever. [FiveThirtyEight]Alabama is No. 3…of all time. Alabama is at the top of the Associated Press college football poll this week for the 99th time. This puts them above Notre Dame and behind only Ohio State and Oklahoma in all-time appearances at #1. [ESPN]Ohio State gets a massive winNo. 6 ranked Ohio State had a come-from-behind victory over No. 2 ranked Penn State to win 39-38. They entered the fourth quarter down 35-20 with an abysmal chance at winning. Later, down by 5 and with just under two minutes left the Buckeyes scored a touchdown, a single play that raised their win probability by 34.2 percentage points, one of the biggest swings of the week. Following the win, we give Ohio State a 64 percent chance of winning the Big Ten conference and a 57 percent chance of making the playoff, while Penn State has a mere 3 percent chance of winning the conference and only a 13 percent chance of making the playoff. [ESPN, FiveThirtyEight]Maybe comparing your employees to prisoners isn’t super coolTexans owner Bob McNair made a comment that “We can’t have the inmates running the prison” during an NFL owners meeting in reference to recent player demonstrations against white supremacy. This ticked off his team mightily. Receiver DeAndre Hopkins and running back D’Onta Foreman missed a practice Friday in response, and Sunday all but about 10 Texans players took a knee during the national anthem. [ESPN]Something’s up with the ballsPlayers have begun to flag that something is off with the balls this World Series. Gosh, I wonder what’s up. The regular season wrapped with the most home runs ever. The rate during that season — that insane, record-breaking season — of one homer every 27.1 at-bats. In this World Series through the first four games, there were 15 homers or one every 17.5 at-bats. That’s a crazy 35 percent improvement in the rate, which is huge. Then you think about last night: There were 7 home runs in 85 at bats, or 1 every 12.1 at-bats. Something’s up. [Sports Illustrated]Olympics could be a distractionYear three of the National Women’s Hockey League started up Saturday, and the league will balance new signings and partnerships with the challenge of running operations while the top talent in the league is off the ice elsewhere preparing for the 2018 Olympic games. [ESPN]Make sure to try your hand at our fun NFL can you beat the FiveThirtyEight predictions? game!Big Number19 touchdownsIt would appear that Houston has found its future in Deshaun Watson, who Sunday passed Kurt Warner with 19 touchdowns in his first seven games. His statline in Sunday’s loss to Seattle was outstanding, and on the season he’s got three games with four passing touchdowns. Houston is far from a favorite but also far from out of the hunt when it comes to the playoffs this year — 18 percent chance of making the playoffs according to FiveThirtyEight — but finding a player like Watson could turn things around in years to come. A timeless tale of crosscultural harmony

first_imgIndia Harmony Foundation and Penguin launched a book entitled, ‘A Tale of Wonder: Kathakautukam’ by Srivara, translated into English by diplomat /scholar and renowned author A N D Haksar and published by Penguin. The book launch was held on March 29, 2019, at Kamladevi Complex, India International Centre, in the presence of Chief Guest N N Vohra, former Governor of Jammu and Kashmir. ‘A Tale of Wonder: Kathakautukam’ is a scintillating example of cross-cultural harmony from medieval Kashmir. A Biblical and Koranic story in medieval Persian reaches Kashmir and is transformed there into a Sanskrit epic poem, with India’s mythic overtones – an attestation to this country’s rich syncretic and multicultural past. Also Read – Add new books to your shelfIn this tale, the beautiful princess Zuleikha has nightly visions of Yusuf, a handsome young stranger. Captivated by his beauty, her waking hours are filled with heartaches, much to the anxiety of her near ones. But Zuleikha is resolved to be united with Yusuf.
